Google Meet

How to record a Google Meet without host permission

If you're not the host and the host hasn't enabled recording, here's how to capture the meeting from your own browser, legally and reliably.

Google Meet's built-in recording is gated to the host (or a co-host that the host promotes) on specific Workspace plans. If you're a participant and you want a copy of the call for your own notes, you have to record it yourself. RecordMeeting captures the meeting locally from your Chrome browser, so you don't need any permission from the host or your IT admin.

Steps

  1. 1

Check the legal rules in your region first

Recording someone without their knowledge can be illegal depending on where you and the other participants live. Most jurisdictions follow either "one-party consent" (you can record any conversation you're part of) or "all-party consent" (everyone has to agree). When in doubt, tell the room you're recording. It's the safest and most professional default.

  2. 2

    Install the RecordMeeting extension

Install the RecordMeeting Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store. Sign in with your Google account when prompted. It's free to start and no credit card is required.

  3. 3

Join the meeting and click record

Open the Meet call as a regular participant and click the RecordMeeting button in the Meet interface. The recording happens in your browser tab. The host does not need to grant permission, and no third-party bot is added to the call. Google Meet's standard recording indicator does appear to all participants.

  4. 4

Stop recording or leave the call

The recording stops automatically when you leave the call, or you can stop it manually. The video, transcript and AI summary are processed within a few minutes and stored in your workspace.

Good to know

A note on consent

Two-party consent states (e.g. California, Florida, Pennsylvania) and most of the EU require all participants to be aware they're being recorded. Letting the call know ("I'm going to record this so I can take notes afterwards, is that OK?") both keeps you on the right side of the law and builds trust. RecordMeeting is a tool for making your own notes, not a way to capture conversations covertly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to record a Google Meet without telling people?

It depends on your jurisdiction. One-party consent regions (e.g. most US states, the UK) generally allow you to record a call you're part of. Two-party / all-party consent regions (e.g. California, the EU broadly) require everyone to know. We strongly recommend always telling participants. It's the professional default.

Will the host or organizer be notified that I'm recording?

Google Meet displays its standard recording indicator to all participants when any recording is active. There is no separate notification specifically about RecordMeeting, and no extra participant is added to the call.

Can my IT admin block this?

Workspace admins can block Chrome extension installs via policy. If your admin allows extension installs, RecordMeeting works on any Google account, including the free Gmail account.

What happens to the recording after the call?

It's uploaded to your private RecordMeeting workspace. You decide whether to share it with anyone. By default, only you can see it.
