How to Voice Record on iPhone in 2026
iPhone includes a built-in voice recording app that most users underestimate. In 2026, iOS 18 also added call recording directly in the Phone app. Here is every method available, from the simplest built-in option to third-party apps that add automatic transcription.
Voice Memos - The Built-In Option
Voice Memos is included with every iPhone and requires no download. Open the app and tap the red record button to start. It records from the iPhone's microphone and captures high-quality audio for conversations, notes, and interviews. Recordings are stored locally and synced to iCloud if enabled. iOS 18 added automatic transcription to Voice Memos, so after recording you can read a full text version of what was said. The transcript is available in the Voice Memos app on both iPhone and Mac.
iOS 18 Phone Call Recording
iOS 18 introduced a Record button in the Phone app for cellular calls. Tap it during any call to start recording. Both callers hear an audio announcement that recording has begun, which satisfies consent requirements in most jurisdictions. The recording and transcript are saved automatically to the Notes app under a section called Phone Recordings. This feature is limited to cellular calls in the native Phone app. It does not work for FaceTime calls or third-party VoIP apps.
Third-Party Apps With Transcription
Apps like Otter.ai and Rev Voice Recorder are available on the App Store and add features beyond what Voice Memos provides. Otter.ai transcribes recordings in real-time and identifies multiple speakers, making it useful for meetings and interviews. Rev records audio and offers human-reviewed transcription as an optional paid service for higher accuracy. These apps sync to the cloud automatically, so your recordings are accessible on any device. Review their subscription pricing before committing if you record frequently.
Tips for Better iPhone Recording Quality
iPhone microphones perform best when the device is within one to two feet of the speaker. In noisy environments, use the Voice Memos enhanced recording mode, which reduces background noise automatically. Avoid covering the bottom microphone with your hand during recording. For long recordings such as meetings or interviews, plug in a wired headset with an inline microphone to improve pickup of your own voice. Check the recording immediately after ending it to confirm it saved and the audio is clear before the session details fade from memory.
