The problem

Why recording Microsoft Teams is harder than it should be

Only the meeting organizer or specific roles can record

Microsoft Teams restricts recording to meeting organizers and co-organizers by default. Attendees, guests from external tenants, and participants without the right Teams license cannot start a recording from within the platform.

Recording is controlled by tenant admin policies

Your organization's IT admin can disable recording entirely via Teams admin policies. Even if you have a paid license, a policy set at the tenant level can prevent recording with no override available to regular users.

Guests from other tenants are often blocked

When you join a Teams meeting hosted by a client or partner organization, you join as a guest in their tenant. Guest recording permissions are separate and are often more restricted than internal user permissions.

Recordings go to Microsoft Stream or SharePoint

Teams recordings land in Microsoft Stream (or SharePoint depending on your configuration). Access management, sharing, and retention are tied to your organization's Microsoft 365 setup, adding friction for anyone outside the tenant.

How it works

RecordMeeting on Microsoft Teams

RecordMeeting runs as a Chrome extension inside your browser tab. Join any Teams meeting through the browser, click record, and the call is captured alongside audio and video from your tab. No admin approval, no tenant policy to work around, no role requirement. The recording uploads to your private workspace with a full transcript, speaker labels, and an AI summary. Works for guests joining from external tenants, individual users on personal accounts, and any Teams participant running Chrome.

1

Open in Chrome

Open the Microsoft Teams meeting link in Chrome with RecordMeeting installed.

2

Click record

Start recording from the extension. The call is captured from your browser tab.

3

Get the transcript

After the call, your recording and full transcript land in your workspace.

Use cases

Who records Microsoft Teams calls with RecordMeeting

Guest participants at client Teams meetings

Join a client's Teams meeting as a guest and still capture the conversation. The recording stays in your own workspace, separate from their Microsoft 365 environment.

Sales and account calls

Record every Teams demo and account review. Bring the transcript into your CRM, search for specific topics, and share key moments with colleagues who were not on the call.

Remote teams with mixed licenses

Not everyone on the team has a Teams Premium or E3 license. RecordMeeting gives all participants the same recording capability regardless of their Microsoft 365 tier.

Compliance-sensitive conversations

Keep your own private record of important discussions. If your organization uses Microsoft Purview for compliance recording, RecordMeeting operates as a separate private layer without interfering.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Chrome Web Store

"I use it for Google Meet calls - super convenient: one click and the meeting is recorded, and afterwards you automatically get a transcript in a Google Doc with speaker labels and timestamps. A big plus for privacy: it doesn’t add any “bots” to the participant list, everything stays clean and professional. Search across meetings and 2×/3× playback are must-haves to quickly pull out decisions and action items. A real lifesaver for work, highly recommend!"
