Record Google Meet for Free in 2026
You do not need a paid Google Workspace plan to record Google Meet. A free Chrome extension captures the entire call, including audio and video, and delivers a transcript and summary when it ends. Here is how to set it up in under two minutes.
Why the Built-In Recorder Has Limits
Google Meet's native recording is only available to Google Workspace Business Standard and higher accounts. If you use a personal Gmail, Google Workspace Starter, or a free education account, the Record option is simply not available. Even on paid plans, only the meeting host can start the recording. If you frequently join calls hosted by others, or your organization is on a lower-tier plan, you need an alternative approach that puts the recording control in your hands.
How a Chrome Extension Solves This
RecordMeeting installs as a Chrome extension and captures your Meet call at the browser level. It does not need server-side access to Google's infrastructure, so Workspace plan restrictions do not apply. The extension adds a small toolbar inside your Meet interface. Clicking record starts capture of your screen, microphone, and system audio simultaneously. The recording happens locally in your browser, then uploads to your secure workspace when the call ends. No host permissions needed, no admin approval required.
Setting Up the Extension
Go to the Chrome Web Store and install the RecordMeeting extension. Sign in with your Google account when prompted. Open any Google Meet call. You will see the RecordMeeting toolbar appear in the bottom bar of the meeting. Click the green record button to start. A small indicator confirms that capture is active. When the meeting ends or you click stop, the recording uploads automatically. Within a few minutes, your workspace shows the video, a full transcript with speaker labels, and a meeting summary.
Sharing Recordings With Your Team
Every recording in your RecordMeeting workspace can be shared with a private link. You decide whether the link is accessible to anyone with the URL or only to specific email addresses. Teammates who missed the call can watch the full video or read the transcript without needing to install the extension themselves. Exportable formats include MP4 for the video and plain text or DOCX for the transcript. This makes it easy to archive calls in Notion, Confluence, or a shared drive.
