Google Meet Recording Not Working - Fixes for 2026

If the Record option is missing, grayed out, or failing in Google Meet, the cause is usually one of a handful of account or settings issues. This guide explains each one and how to resolve it quickly.

The Record Button Is Missing

The most common reason the record button does not appear is that your Google Workspace plan does not include recording. Recording is only available on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise, and certain education plans. Free Gmail accounts and Google Workspace Starter do not have access. Check your plan in Google Admin Console or ask your IT admin. If upgrading is not an option, a Chrome extension like RecordMeeting records calls from the browser without requiring any Workspace features.

The Record Option Is Grayed Out

A grayed-out Record button usually means your account has the right plan but recording is disabled by the admin. Google Workspace admins can restrict recording to specific organizational units. Ask your admin to enable recording for your account in the Admin Console under Apps, Google Workspace, Google Meet, Meet video settings. Admins can also restrict who recordings are saved to, so confirm that the save destination is also configured correctly.

Recording Starts but Stops Unexpectedly

Recording can stop mid-call if you lose network connection, if Google Drive (the save destination) runs out of storage, or if the meeting host ends the call before you expected. Check your Google Drive storage quota at drive.google.com. If it is full, the recording cannot save and will be lost. Free up space or upgrade storage before your next important meeting. On slow connections, consider using a browser extension that records locally first, then uploads when the connection stabilizes.

Recording Saved but Cannot Be Found

After a meeting ends, the recording takes 10 to 30 minutes to process before it appears in Google Drive. Look in My Drive, not Shared Drives, as recordings always save to the host's personal Drive. You should also receive an email notification with a direct link once processing is complete. If the email did not arrive and the file is not in Drive after an hour, check the Spam folder. If the recording is still missing, confirm recording was actually running during the call by reviewing the meeting participants list.

Try it on your next meeting

Free to get started. Install the Chrome extension and record your first call in under a minute.
