How to record a WhatsApp call
WhatsApp has no built-in call recording. Capture WhatsApp Web video calls from Chrome, then get a transcript and summary in your workspace.
Works with
WhatsApp does not offer native recording for voice or video calls. Once the call ends, the conversation is gone unless you captured it yourself. RecordMeeting works with WhatsApp Web in Chrome: open the call in a browser tab, click record, and receive an MP4, searchable transcript, and AI summary afterward. Mobile-only calls still need the phone's screen recorder.
Built for WhatsApp Web
Record from web.whatsapp.com in Chrome. No WhatsApp Business API, no paid WhatsApp plan, and no full-desktop screen recorder.
No notetaker bot in the call
Capture happens in your browser tab after the call is decrypted on your device. No extra participant joins the WhatsApp call.
Video, transcript and AI summary
Every recording becomes an MP4, a transcript in 50+ languages, and a summary with action items you can share or download.
Step-by-step
Follow these steps
- 1
Install the RecordMeeting Chrome extension
Open the Chrome Web Store, add RecordMeeting, and sign in with Google. It is free to start and no credit card is required. The extension records the active browser tab, so this WhatsApp workflow only works on desktop Chrome with WhatsApp Web — not inside the mobile apps alone.

Open WhatsApp Web in Chrome
Go to web.whatsapp.com and scan the QR code with your phone if you are not already linked. Leave that tab open and signed in. The chat list and the video-call button in the chat header are what you will use next — calls that stay only on iPhone or Android cannot be captured by a Chrome extension.

Start or join a WhatsApp video call
From WhatsApp Web, open the contact or group, then place or accept a video call so audio and video play inside the Chrome tab. Voice-only mobile calls will not appear here. Tell participants you are recording when consent rules or professional etiquette require it.

Click record in RecordMeeting
Open the RecordMeeting extension popup (or the in-tab control) and start recording the WhatsApp Web tab. Capture happens after the call is decrypted on your device — the same layer as a screen recorder — so no extra bot joins the WhatsApp participant list. Keep the tab visible while you record.

iPhone and Android fallback
If the other person can only join from a phone, use the built-in iOS or Android screen recorder and enable microphone audio. That path works, but you get a large screen video without an automatic transcript. Move important client calls to WhatsApp Web whenever both sides can use a computer.
