Why SRT subtitles do not show in HTML5 video
The HTML track element only reads WebVTT. An SRT file linked there is ignored without an error. The file also needs the WEBVTT header, dots before the milliseconds and the text/vtt content type on the server.
Why Vimeo says Invalid Caption File
Platforms reject VTT files with a missing header, commas in the times, captions that end before they start, or captions that start before the previous one ends. The converter fixes the header and time format and lists the timing problems so you can fix them in the editor.
Captions that work online but not from your computer
Browsers block subtitle files when a page is opened straight from your disk. Test the video from a local web server or after uploading it, and the same VTT file will load.
