WebVTT is the caption format of the web: YouTube, Zoom, Teams and Vimeo all produce it. SRT is the format almost everything else reads, from VLC and smart TVs to Premiere Pro and Facebook uploads. This tool converts one to the other, removes the parts of VTT that SRT cannot show and keeps every caption and its timing.

VTT and SRT: the differences that matter
Both formats list captions with a start time, an end time and text. VTT starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a dot before the milliseconds, and can carry positioning, styles and notes. SRT has numbered captions, a comma before the milliseconds and plain text. Converting means removing the extras and changing the punctuation of the times.
Why align:start position:0% shows up in some converted files
VTT captions can end their timing line with positioning settings. Simple converters copy them into the SRT, where players show them as text. This converter removes positioning, STYLE and NOTE blocks and voice or colour tags, and keeps italics and bold, which SRT supports.
Clean YouTube auto-captions
VTT files downloaded from YouTube repeat each line while it scrolls and contain word-by-word timing tags. The converter detects that pattern, removes the repeats and tags, and tells you how many lines it removed. You can keep the original captions with one switch.
